Nearby :"Quality of life, harmony, taste ..." these are the terms which best define the Périgord.
First of all, as has been shown, the "Périgord's raison d'être" is to welcome with open arms those who come here to rediscover forgotten pleasures offered by the natural and simple things in life : pure air, silence, space (especially that), the genuine beauty of the surroundings and the art of living that these pleasures encourage.
Those who value archeology, history, including those who love gastronomy, in the country of prehistoric art and troubadors, with its natural beauties, its caves, its old stone buildings and its 1,001 castles, the Perigord and its capital Perigueux, lovingly restored, are all places that MUST be visited.
Come and wander around Périgueux classified “Town of Art and History” with :
- the Gallo-Roman remains of the ancient town of Vesunna
- the Saint-Front Cathedral : one of the landmark religious buildings along the Way of St James UNESCO World Heritage Site heading to Santiago de Compostela.
This cathedral is quite a surprise. An unusual sight. It rears up, clear and white, from the very middle of the swelling sea of Medieval Périgueux roofs. A flash of brightness but which lasts. It dominates the town with its marvellous mass. What astonishes you is the lavish yet sober aspect of the Romanesque and Byzantine architecture but above all, it is the way in which the bell-tower grows ever taller as you approach just as the Compostella pilgrims in former times must have approached it, dazzled by it, captivated by it.
It is lofty and white, stark and empty with naves and domes, with arches and galleries and clear stained glass to diffuse the azure brilliance onto the stainless white stone.
- the Medieval and Renaissance district, one of the largest conservation areas in France. In strolling around the charming narrow streets, is to wander through two thousand years of history.
Eating well is a virtue ! Having delighted your eyes, now is the time to delight your taste-buds. Armed with your shopping basket, you will be captivated by the atmosphere of our Wednesday and Saturday morning markets, where all the colours, smells and tastes of local produce, will excite all your senses.
From November to March, local award-winning duck, goose and truffles markets.
Taste the richness of this exceptional territory : foie gras, duck, truffles, cep mushrooms, strawberries, walnuts, goat's cheese, Bergerac and Saint-Emilion wines …
From the North to the South, from the East to the West, the countryside around Perigueux reveals its treasures.
It is said that the Perigord countryside is among the gentlest in the world and since happiness never comes alone, the villages of the Perigord are overwhelmingly beautiful : a Romanesque church roofed in heavy stone shingles (called lauzes in french), a chateau or a very old majestic residence on which History has left scars that tell many a tale, the curve of an old bridge, houses enclosing the priest's garden where forgotten flowers flower discreetly and just there, beyond the last barn of the village, the meadows softly rise and fall to the undulating mushroom woods where the muffled fox-barks yelp in the night. At the period of the grape picking, the vines are adorned with a gleaming kaleidoscope of colours, a very subtle impression of russet ...
- Brantôme, Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, Monpazier, La Roque-Gageac, Sarlat …
- the terrace at Domme is a miracle of nature refined by man. As you look upward from the valley on certain days, your first sight of Domme is enough to dazzle you for life.
- the Lascaux Cave (dubbed the "Sistine Chapel of Prehistory"), Grand Roc, Villars, Gouffre of Proumeyssac …
- the Castles of Beynac, Castelnaud, Hautefort, Jumilhac, Losse, Puyguilhem …
Whether they are perched on the hills overlooking the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, or hidden in the forests …
- the fabulous gardens of the Manoir d'Eyrignac, the suspened Gardens of Marqueyssac ...
- the Vézère valley, also known as the Valley of Mankind, is one of France's UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Henry Miller on discovering the Perigord wrote :
“This is a magic land jealously guarded by poets ... It is a kind of Paradise granted to the French. I am convinced that that is how it was for Cro-Magnon Man and that he settled here because he was extremely intelligent, with a highly developed sense of beauty. Maybe one day France will cease to exist but the Dordogne will survive just like the dreams that nourish the human soul.”
Numerous cultural, musical and summer festivals and events, of which the famous International "Mimos" Festival of Perigueux, which will celebrate its th edition, features mime, dance, object theatre, acrobatics, street entertainment, puppets and juggling.
