To the West the basilica and convents of Fourviere hill lend their aura of ancient spirituality to the scene.

To the East the Rhone and Saone Rivers flow to their junction, crowding the heart of the city within the so-called Peninsula. In the distance, the plains of the Ain extend to the foot of the Alps and glimpses of the Mont Blanc on clear days.

To the North, the Croix-Rousse hill, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, rises in tiers of russet, rose and ochre.

To the South, the four spires of St-Jean\'s primatial church soar skywards.
